Fun in the Forests
The great pine forests of Deeside and Strathspey are the western-most part of the European Boreal forest and form the largest area of ancient and semi-natural woodland in Britain. Now, you may say "so what?", but that means that this area has more in common with bits of Canada and Russia than the rest of the UK!
The ancient Caledonian forests are one of the area’s most distinctive features and they are managed carefully for people to enjoy.
Public and private owners of forest and woodland in the Cairngorms National Park recognise the value of recreation both in terms of the economy but also in building an understanding and awareness of a whole host of topics from habitat to climate change.
There are undoubtedly challenges, particularly when a large number of protected species make the forests their home, but, with close monitoring of special sites at particular times of year and careful management of people (and their dogs, bikes, horses etc!) everyone and everything can get the most out of these magical places.
